Heather Prowse is an in-demand session musician working in Sydney, Australia. In 2017 Heather completed her Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance – Trumpet) at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In 2018 she was selected to participate in the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive in Tarraleah, Tasmania. She is a former recipient of the Sarah Waugh Scholarship from Jazz Workshop Australia, and of the Jann Rutherford Mentorship Award from Sydney Improvised Music Association. As of 2019 she hones her craft as an Artist-in-Residence at Annandale Creative Arts Centre.
Mentors of Heather read like a who’s who of Australian improvised music: Phil Slater, Warwick Alder, Miroslav Bukovsky, Simon Sweeney, Mike Rivett, Dr. Sandy Evans and Dr. Simon Barker to name a few. She has also studied with New York City-based trumpeters Ingrid Jensen, Nadje Noordhuis and Mat Jodrell.
Heather is in-demand as a session trumpeter in many bands across Sydney (see Projects) and also works as a jazz and contemporary vocalist in cafe, bar and private event settings. She is also an educator (see Teaching), composer and arranger. She has performed on both trumpet and vocals on Sydney’s most prestigious stages: Sydney Opera House, Enmore Theatre, The Basement, Venue 505 and Foundry 616; striving all the while to bring a fresh sound to the jazz tradition.
